The Virgen Del Carmen


The Virgen Del Carmen is the Virgen of Chile, your name coming of Carmelo, a mountain located in the population of Haifa in the north of Israel, in the zone Galilean.

On 16 July each year throngs of Chileans clamour through the streets and particularly at the MaipĂș Temple, 20km outside of Santiago, to celebrate their devotion to the Virgen Del Carmen, cherished patron saint of Chile and the armed forces.
The Virgin has a long history of affiliation with warfare in this part of the world. The Spanish conquered the Americas in her name, but she was soon turned against them, as she became the rallying banner for nationalist and break-away forces in the Chilean War of Independence.
